Who would collect something like that?
There is the collector who includes only bags that they have personally obtained on their own flights in their collection. Then there is the collector who also accepts other ways of acquiring new bags. They exchange duplicate bags for new examples, or they buy bags online.
Worldwide, there is a well-connected community of around 100 to 200 active collectors.
Does it make any sense?
At first glance, collecting sick bags seems completely pointless. The collector sacrifices time - and sometimes money - for worthless disposable bags. They also need a lot of storage space to house their collection.
On closer inspection, however, the collector does discover some positive aspects. Through trading activities, they get to know other friendly collectors, in some cases even in person. Perhaps they become inspired to present their collection to the public online; in doing so, they will learn quite a bit about creating websites.
Another way to give collecting a sense of purpose is to link it to a fundraising campaign for a charitable cause.
How does the fundraising campaign work?
help alliance is a non-profit organisation under the umbrella of the Lufthansa Group. For more than 25 years, it has been running social projects for young people around the world. Every donation goes entirely to the projects.
Whenever the collector acquires a new bag, they assign it an individual value in euros and donate that amount to help alliance. Admittedly, this is a laborious process. Over the years, however, many very small amounts add up to a substantial donation.
